10/4/05 Seniors v Allstars W 7-6

Sabres start with 3 lines but go a goal behind before they have all
had a shift, going a further goal down early in the first. They then start
playing hockey as a team with all three lines doing what they are asked to
do and finish the 1st leading 3-2. Goals from Stephen Gosling & Justin
Ashworth 2.

Second period. There's nothing in the teams, but with the Allstars
having a smaller bench, it was Sabres belief that the 3rd period would tell.
Someone forgot to tell Allstars the script. 2nd period ends all square at
5-5. Sabres scorers, Sean Hannan & Justin completing his hat trick.

Sabres, lines continue to play good hockey, with the 3rd line deserving a mention as sometimes they watch rather than play. But today, all players turned up to play hockey, reaping their just rewards, coming out 7-6 winners. Sabres, Sean scoring two more, to complete his hat trick, Joff Barton assisting on goals 4&6 for his two points. Also playing well today, young James Hutson between the pipes (looks like he has found his N/M feet).

On a club, note rather than a match report, my thanks to M Cutts who today had to step down .

20/3/05 Juniors v Coyotes "B" / Juniors v Voodoo

The following match report comes with the following disclaimer; This is MY personal opinion.

So Sabres 6 man bench star against Coyotes 13 man bench are here for another mauling? Maybe not, as Sabres take a 2 goal lead, Sean Hannan grabbinbg both goals. Our player rotation system ( one man gets a rest - the others don't) seems to work, as the first period ends 2 - 2. Unfortunately, 3 minutes into the second period, Sabres take two bench penalties (both my fault) and a tripping call. So here is the outcome. We play 2 on 4. And what do you know? By the time we get back on a level par we are losing. What more can be said? We then get a rest of 1 hour, before our next game against a very hard and physical team, Voodoo. We take a battering 17 - 3. Here we go again. I wish we knew the rules, because I thought if a player received a 5 min major for roughing, why doesn't his opponent receive a 2 min minor?

The incident I am refering to could have resulted in a broken leg. So he retaliated. No excuse, it's a penalty!!! But let's have an even playing field. Winning is not at any cost. So if there are any juniors out there who want to play for a team that wants to play a FAIR hockey game, give us a call. Can you also tell me please, why do Sabres' junior team play two games on the same day?

Well done our players. All again giving 110%

27/2/05 Seniors v Coyotes "B" W 12-9

Sabres start with two lines and again no experienced n/minder. So young Martin Brown dons the pads and off we go. Sabres start well, playing simple but effective hockey, and are soon rewarded with the first score of the period. Sean Hannan scores his first of three, both Sabres' lines playing sensible hockey and Martin between the pipes, doing his bit. Finish first
period leading 5-2, with goals 2 & 3 from Joff Barton, 4 from Stephen Lloyd & 5,with his first goal for the Sabres, Lee Montgomery, abilily assisted by our very own wonder woman Emma Rose (her first point). Unfortunatly the second period goes slightly pear shaped, as Sabres allow Coyotes to play thier own game, finishing this period 8-6 down, Justin Ashworth netting for Sabres.
Third period. Back to basics again. We play hockey our way, with everyone doing their bit and start to turn the game round, leveling at 9 each. Goal 7
Matt Ambler, 8 Stephen Gosling, & 9 Sean Hannan. We are now the better side and keep working hard, all playing for each other, and score three unanswered goals to finish well deserved winners, 12-9 .Goals from S Gosling, S Hannan & J Barton sealing the points.

Only 2 hours after the Seniors' game, the 6 junior players, of whom 3 had played earlier, faced the Voodoo. A game which we were never going to win. So what the hell. Go out and enjoy! After 15 mins we are only 5-1 down. So not doing too badly. Second was not as good, finishing 12-2. But in the Third when we should have run out of steam, as all our players have played long tiring shifts. We only lost 3-2. Making final score 15-4.

Sabres start their second match in a row with a full bench. If only they
could start the match at the same time as thier opponents, they would n't be 3 goals down. But to be fair on our n/minder, Adam Summerfield (remember this name you will be hearing it again), the first slipped through the five gate and the other two were lucky rebounds.

End of first period, we score 1 through Justin Ashworth, but give up another 3 to trail 6-1. All three lines are trying hard against a faster side, but cannot score to get back in the game, giving up 3 more .
Game now looks over. Voodoo swap n/minders. Sabres decide to play hockey, with just rewards; Justin grabbing his second of three, Sean Hannan
getting on the score sheet, before Justin grabs his third and Joff Barton,
making it 9-5 . So final score Voodoo 9 -Sabres 5. If only Sabres had started
on time maybe. Who knows?.

Unfortunately, with a small bench of 7 skaters and a n/minder, of which 6
players had played only an hour before for the seniors .Again this was going
to be a mammoth task. The Coyotes are a good side that have played together for a while. So to finish the first session only 3-1 down says a lot for our lads. Sean Hannan scored our goal.
In the second period the flood gates opened, Coyotes scoring 6 more,
before Matt Ambler scored Sabres' second, with a solo effort one on one .
Third period. Fatigue is setting in, with all our players having played double shifts .

Final score 14-2 . Credit to our boys, they come every game and give it their all.

Sabres start game with a full bench. Only the second time I can remember this happening, and unlike the first time when we lost 18-4, it looked like we were here to win. We are always going to give goals away, because of not having an experienced net minder. But today, young James Hutson played like he's been between the pipes forever! Every line and every shift played good hockey. Even going two goals behind, they never gave up. Allways pulling a goal back, keeping the deficit down to one goal, all through
the first two periods. Start of final period, Sabres 5-4 down. When five or so mins into peroid, Mat Ambler receives a 2 min penalty for not wearing elbow pads. While I don't dispute the call, I do dispute the timing! He has played over 35mins before it's noticed! (Or is it that we are playing the team that has players that run the league?) Whatever the reason, this just lifts the
Sabres and we take a well deserved lead 9-7, with only a few mins to go.

All our players deserve a mention, as they were all MVPs:

First line; J P Hardiman, J Barton, S Hannan, M Ambler.

Second line; S Gosling, J Ashworth, M Brown, L Montgomery.

Third line; M Cutts, S Cutts, S Silois, & Emma Rose.

31/10/04 Seniors v Bolton Eagles L4-13

Sabres start game with two lines, first line all the experience ,second
line youth and inexperience. So game starts 1st line out going down 1-0
early on, despite our net minder who sticks in there week after week playing
as well as he has all season. Second line out, going a further goal down, but
pull one back through Stephen Lloyd, ably assisted by young James Hutson. Our 2nd line, with an average age of around 15, are playing well. Unfortunately our inexperience shows and we concede 3 more, before Stephen Gosling scoring his first of two, makes it 5-2. Sabres 1st line are not shooting the puck. Instead, are trying to walk it in. But keep going and are only two goals down after Stephen bags his second. Late in second period, Andy Bamber, our man between the pipes, twists his knee, making yet another fine stop. Third period and still nothing in game, until with around ten minutes to go, we lose Andy and have to play with 5 out-skaters. Open up the flood gates. Bolton are now shooting for fun, but credit to both our lines, who both gave 110 % and still managed to score our 4th, though Sean Hannan .

Final score 13-4 to Bolton, who were not as gracious winners as we were losers, as one of their players commented (as they shook hands with our manager) that we were rubbish. Well from where I stood, I counted at least a dozen shots that went wide in that last ten minutes.

19/9/04 Seniors v Allstars L11-9

Sabres start their usual enthusiastic selves, but still going a goal
down, drawing level throgh Matt Ambler. Sabres having only one experienced line and one line of juniors and novices, who all gave 110% were unlucky to concede two unanswered goals, before Joff Barton (returning back from a lay off ) and the mighty atom M Ambler, grabbing his second, keeping the score to one down, the first period finishing 3-5 to Allstars. Our novice line start second period and reap a well deserved goal from Stephen Gosling (who suddenly remembered how to shoot). 4-5 nothing in it, Sabres keep playing their usual never say die and up pops Sean Hannan with his couple of goals to put us in front. Allstars are now reeling when little Martin Brown weaves in to make it 7-5. Allstars level 7-7. J Barton regains lead, only for Allstars to level again as clock counts down for end of 2nd period. Can we win this game? 15 mins to go, Allstars take lead again, only for Stephen Lloyd to join the party and square game at 9-9. Alas, Allstars score 2 more. Final score Allstars 11 Sabres 9.

MVP S Gosling. Special mention to our younger players, Stephen Gosling, Stephen Lloyd, James Hutson, Martin Brown. And a special mention to the Cutts brothers Matthew & Shaun, playing their first game. Well done lads. See you next week.

19/9/04 Seniors v Metros L8-2

Sabres start their third game of the new season, again with a shortish
bench . With one player short of a line change, this meaning one player doing a double shift, coupled with the fact that 3 of the 7 out skaters were
juniors playing up, it was always go to be tough. Also, the League format
changed this season to 3 fifteen minute periods.

So game starts. Sabres hold their own and are only one goal down half way through first period and should have squared the game on the power play, having a 2 man advantage. But couldn't break down the Metros D. End of 1st 2-0 Metros.

2nd period. Although our lads played well, the score all went Metros' way with 5 unanswered goals. End 2nd 7-0.

3rd period Sabres are now down but not out. Sean Hannan starts
the revival with a unassisted goal, followed by another solo effort by MVP
Martin Brown. Sabres then have a 4 min powerplay, but again cannot find the net. Metros score their 8th. Final score 8-2.

Sabres face top team on the last match of the season with only 5 out
players and the N/Minder. The Bulls must have thought it was their

birthday. But this bunch of lads had other ideas, actually scoring first,
Patrick O'Brien opening the Sabres account. With only one spare player, our
lads were doing five or six minute shifts, so fatigue was always going to be a problem. So to finish the first half only three goals to one down, shows how hard the 6 guys were playing.
The second half was a lot of the time one way traffic, Bulls taking a 7-2
lead. But the Sabres close the gap, Sean Hannan the scorer. By now we are
beginning to tire, so call a time out. 30 seconds rest at least. From the
restart Sabres score two quick goals, Matthew Ambler getting a pair. Bulls
call time out. Not quite the way their game plan had gone. Bulls score three
more to seal the points, but the match winners for me were Martin & Patrick
O'Brien, Sean Hannan, Jon Paul Hardiman, Matthew Ambler and N/Minder Andy Bamber. MVP was awarded to S Hannan. For me, all six were MVPs.

With a few more players, with the same heart and willingness to play for each other and next season cannot come quick enough.

Sabres start steadily ,but soon go 2 goals down. However, they stuck to the task in hand to pull the deficit back, with 2 goals from Martin Uren . Although playing good hockey, a mixture of bad bounces and dubious decisions (not like
me to call the men in stripes). At 14-20 Scorpions are given a P/P P Hannan (back after work commitments) deciding he needs 2 mins rest: Result:- They go a goal behind! This is how the game continued for the rest of the first period. Sabres playing catch up. Sabres playing sensible hockey, at times taking the lead. At 5-4, and now look in control, 2nd period continues, both sides trading goals. Sabres lead 9-8 into last few minutes, but Scorpions level. Both teams played well and a draw was a fair result. 30/11/03 Seniors v Bulls L6-13

Again Sabres start well, only to go a goal down. But to their credit, against a side playing physical hockey, Sabres level, through A. Welsh, ably assisted by M. Ambler. Our rookie n/minder Andy Bamber, pulled off some great saves, to keep us in the hunt. Only to again go 2-1 behind, before A. Scott scores his first of his three, to again level. Sabres go 4-2 behind while short handed, Jon Hardiman receiving a 5 min penalty for high sticks. Sabres pull a goal back short handed, A Scott getting his second, end of first period. Start of second period with 2 mins of Jon's penalty remaining, Bulls score their fifth, only to go another goal in front. Things are going against Sabres as Captain J. Barton takes a 2+2 for interference and u/conduct. At this point, we wonder if the referee has brought his glasses, as he can only see the white shirts' penalties. J. Hardiman scores his now customary point per game, 4-6. Bulls then ran riot through rough play and lax officials, ran out 13-6 winners. All credit to our players who worked hard through out both periods and getting no rubs. Perhaps a change of shirt colour may help.

23/11/03 U18s v Coyotes "A" L 0-5

Unfortunately the Sabres had to forfeit this game because they didn't have a netminder. So they played a friendly against the Coyotes with the help of the Voodoos' netminder and two Coyotes players + the six Sabre players that have turned out for every game. Many thanks to the loan players and the Coyotes team for the way they played this game, as on certain shifts they were playing against our rookie line. Final score was 10-8.

It is with much regret that I have to report that this will be my last report for the U18's, as the Sabres' manager has had to withdraw the team from the League, as it is impossible to carry on with no n/minder and only a handful of players turning out for every game. In my opinion this was forced on the team by a player not being able to control his temper. A lesson to be learned that this is a team sport and the team suffers. I felt sorry for the younger members of the squad as all they can look forward to is training and friendly games.

M.V.P. Award to Martin Brown.

Sabres again start strongly having much of the possession in the opening spell, only to go a goal down. Still, they worked hard, but couldn't find a way through the Bolton defence. Things started to go sadly wrong at 7-38, when a bad mistake by yours truly, take a bench penalty and lose another goal. By some badly timed and silly passes out of defence, we concede three more goals. Things are going badly wrong. Not one of the best games Sabres have played, having to field a novice n/minder and bench coach (maybe I should stick to writing). We lose 9-3 . Well played to our novice N/M, Andy Bamber and point scorers; A Scott 2; S Hannan 1; J Seton 1 assist;

26/10/03 Seniors v Coyotes "B" L7-6

The Sabes start a new season today, as their U18/Senior netminder received a season ban last week, for fighting. So now they have to play with a rookie every game!

This week my report is from a slightly different view, as I was helping out on the bench. The Sabres all played well again, but were always chasing the game, as they were always behind by a goal or two. Although it could have been worse, if it wasn't for N/M Martin Uren, who sometimes stood on his head to make great saves, as the Coyotes' strategy was to have a player camped out on the net. Still, the Sabres stuck to their task of trying to even the score. Some great work at 2-0 by P Greenwood, feeding the little man M Ambler, to make it 2-1. But as the story reads, we go down another goal, before J Seton makes it 3-2. Coyotes again restore their two goal advantage when our skipper, J Barton, on one of his rare trips forward today, pulls another back. Both teams trade goals as S Hannan gets Sabres' fourth. J Hardiman (have I scored a point in every game?) makes it five for the Sabres, at which point, the Sabres would have been ahead, but for giving up a short-handed goal. But they keep going, with less than five minutes of the match remaining Sabres equalise 6-6. This is probably my time to take a rap on the knuckles, as I should have made better use of our line changes. As the clock ticks down, we get caught by the man camping out on the crease. 7-6 Coyotes. Sorry boys (need to wear "L" plates). Again, 'can't fault the effort from the team points scorers: P Greenwood 1+2; J Hardiman 1+1; J Barton 1+1; J Seton 1+1; S Hannan 1; M Ambler 1. MVP S Hannan.

19/10/03 Juniors v Wildsharks L22-3

The Sabres start yet another game short on experienced players, 5 this time and 4 rookies. This week's report lost 22-3. Point scorers: A Scott1+1; M Ambler 1; S Hannan 1; M Brathe 1 assist.

Now down to the match. The Sabres' manager pulls the team with 5 mins left of the match after N/M M Welch receives a 5+ Game for fighting , after throwing a punch at a Wildshark forward, who allegedly kicked him, after he smouthered the puck. This to me, whilst understanding his frustration at not being protected by the officials, has not done his team mates any favours, as he now sits out the next match. Unfortunately, unless the Sabres can get their full bench of "stars" out every game, these sort of scores will be the norm. Again 'can't fault the effort of the players who turned out again, S Hannan, A Scott, S Lloyd, M Ambler, L Burgess, M Brathe, J Zammit, M Brown & M Welch. MVP S Hannan.

On a more positive note, it was nice to see two of our rookies, S Lloyd & L Burgess, combining to make a great move early in the game forcing the n/mider to make a good save .

The U 18's start their campaign with a 7 man bench, 3 seasoned campaigners and 4 rookies, this being due to 3 players serving a one match ban carried over from last season ( that being another story). So we were always going to be up against it with all three of our "stars" working double shifts and our four "rookies" trying their butts off. It was tough right from the buzzer. Our rookie netminder Martin Brown (who had only been between the pipes in training) making a great save after 6 secs. At 43 secs the start of the onslaught, final result 23-0 loss. All the Sabres players played their hearts out and all deserve credit. Well played Marcus Brathe, Sean Hannan , & Matthew Ambler and the rookies Stephen Lloyd, Lewis Burgess, James Zammit & N/M Martin Brown. MVP M Ambler

Well, different day same result. Sabres win 8-5. Sabres again start well. Only 1min 10 secs into game and captain Joff Barton scores his first of 5, to make it 1-0. 5-36: Sean Hannan makes it 2-0. Some shaky passes out of defence bring netminder, Mike Welch, into action, making a great save, one-on-one. At 10-34 Scorpions pull one back, through Sabres giving away the puck in their opponents' half! Sabres twice hit the pipes. Finish 1st half, 2-1.
Scorpions sting early in second period, 20-55, to level game. 25-16: Up pops that man again, Joff Barton, 3-2. Sabres are playing as a unit, although a little more communication between players would help to keep possession of the puck. At 25-38, the little atom, Matt Ambler, wins face off and Jack Seton rips one into top corner .
26-28: Joff completes his hat trick. Goals are now coming quicker than the 192 buses. At 28-00mins, Jack Seton, with some good work out on the wing, then slots a beauty in bottom corner, to make it 7-2. Sabres are coasting. Or are they? 13-01: Scorpions score. 14-07: Scorpions score. 15-03: Scorpions score. It's now 7-5, with five mins left and anybody who knows hockey, that's a life time. A line change is needed and at 16-46, after good defensive work by Abby Scott and Matt, they clear puck to skipper Joff, to score 8-5. Sabres settle and count down the clock. Another good result. MVP Andy Bamber
Pionts Scorers J Barton 5; J Seton 2; S Hannan 1+1; M Ambler +2; A Bamber+1; A Scott +1.

For anybody who does not understand how the individual players points are awarded, here's how: Each player scoring a goal is awarded 1 point. The player who passes the puck to the goal scorer is also awarded 1 point . So, for example, today's game 8 goals, but 13 players points.

28/9/03 Under 14's YDT v Macclesfield L7-5

21/9/03 Seniors v Tomahawks W4-0

Sabres worked hard right from the buzzer. At 12-02 Tomahawks take a tripping penalty and Jon Hardiman (there's still life in these legs) scores. Mike Welch makes two good saves in quick succession, to keep Sabres in front. Sabres seem to have a man advantage because of their work rate. Captain Joff Barton makes it two, as clock counts down for end of 1st period. Andy Welch with his first, 6-04 into second, and making it 4-0 through sheer determination, while lay down. A well deserved MVP to Net minder Mike Welch for his first shut out.Well played to all the Sabres players today. They all played together as a unit.

21/9/03 Under 14's Youth Development L6-5

This week I caught the last ten minutes or so of the Under 14s game, and from where I was standing although they just lost 6-5, they all played really well. So well done the young Sabres.

7/9/03 Seniors v Hellcats L8-5

Sabres started game well only to go two goals down through some basic defensive errors, fought back well, Sean Hannan scoring twice to level game, but unable to take advatage of two Hellcat penalties . Hellcats take a two goal advantage again, Sabres work hard to pull level through the old man himself, Jon Paul Hardiman, making amends for earlier mistakes and club captain, Joff Barton, with one of the hardest push shots I've seen this season {it nearly reached the back of the net}.Sabres take a well deserved lead through Abbey Scott deservedly getting his just rewards. They then press self destruct button, giving away three goals, the 3rd on a power play, after Andy Welch takes 2 mins for abuse of official. Hellcats make it 8-5 in last minute.
